Uma brought some smashing t0shrits, this is three put together to be a banner about the REVOLUTION OF KINDNESS! She also made great mash up of two blue shirts, profiling the virtues and smiting the platypus received at the hands of an angry god: creating a venomous, webbed footed, egg laying, beaver tailed, duck-billed mammal..... with otter paws giving her a hug!

And here is Katie and my poor son forced to attend craft eventsI took all the above photos.

This Louisa and I. She is an amazing little girl. I looked forward to seeing her every day! feel terrible because it looks like I am giving her bunny ears. I was trying to make a Peace Sign. She truly has the spirit of a Peace Maker, It was a honor to meet her.

Bryce in his shorts! He measured himself and made the pattern from scratch to fit, cut it out, sewed the side seams, sewed the crotch seam, clipped the ease into the seam allowance, sewed the back darts, then put in the zipper, sewed the 2 path pockets, sewed the hems, made the belt loops, sewed them into the waist band, sewed the waist band to the shorts, I did the button hole and he sewed on the gold button!

Bryce's parents requested that she not be shown in any photographs, only his work. I just didn't have a chance to take a flat shot of his shorts.
Andie in her finished dress! She and her brother Bryce stayed an extra 2 hours to finish their pieces today after camp.. they are leaving on a family trip to Italy tomorrow and wanted to have their new clothes ready to wear over there! She was so pleased. I am so proud of both of them!

She measured herself and made the pattern to fit from scratch, sewed the shoulder and side seams, sewed the neck facing, sewed the center back seam, put in the zipper, made a facing to cover the zipper, made the sleeves and the sheer over-lay, sewed the sleeves in and put in the hem. Not pictured is the sheer pink belt we made to go with it, and a beaded necklace! She wanted to wear it out to dinner in Italy on her family trip.

Maddy hand sewed all these buttons onto her felt and then we glued it onto a hair clip! There is a jingle bell in there!

The second day in the older kid's class we took measurements of all our bodies and made paper mock ups of our shape. Then they each designed a pattern to fit them to make the garment they had drawn on paper.

These pieces are on their way to the Paris Montana shop in Arizona! Two long ruched style skirts, and six palazzo pants. The owner and jewelery designer Heidi designed these patterns.

These are pictures from inside the Jittery Joe's Coffee roaster, where I get the sacks, just down the hill from my studio!
They believe in the bike, just like I do! Hanging on the wall to the left are some more of my burlap wear available for sale.

EXTORTION by Square Peg Artery & Salvage in Philadelphia

Well, this is not the first time I have had to deal with people I thought I was doing good business with trying to rip me off and steal my work: but this lady has to take the cake:
I started selling at Square Peg Artery and Salvage last year, and their terms are pretty steep: a $25.00 artist consignment fee, I pay ALL shipping ( I usually pay to get my work to the vendor, and they pay the return) and a 50%/50%. However, the lady I was communicating with, named Jen, seemed like a good person, someone who put time and effort into communicating, and someone whom I trusted. So I went ahead and sent work along, a big batch, signed the contract and paid the fee.
Well, since thee fist of the year I have sent tow batches of work, one box of adult clothes and more recently a box of kid's clothes , see blog post below. I started getting email from a women named Rachel, saying that they wanted to send my work back and to please sen $$ for shipping. I pointed out that our contract said that work was rotated on a 3 month basis and that there was still a month and a half to go before I need to swap the adult clothes, and that I had just sent the kids clothes a week ago! She replied that the contract was now canceled and to send more money to ship my work back, wipe hands, end of story.
Well, I responded that we had a deal, and if she was going to be so self interested and dishonest then I didn't want to do business with her anyways, who ever she is... but that I was not going to pay to have my work shipped back to me, just to have to send it along to another shop, and also that I am about to leave on a month long bike tour and can not pay for the shipping right now anyways. I also mentioned that it is shameful and dishonest to praise out of one side of her mouth, telling me how creative and great my work is, and then also to be trying to shuffle me out the sdoor, and end our agreement, that I paid to be a part of, just to take my money and then renigg on the contract at her discretion. Then, get this: she writes and tells me that they never received a box of kids clothes at all!
So what am I now to think: well, a woman I have never had any communication with before writes me and tell me that my contract is canceled, so I am out not only a venue but also $25.00, she has all my work and I will have to pay to get it back, and that supposedly more of my work never even arrived. Then why didn't they write me back after I sent an email saying it's on the way!" weeks ago to tell me it never arrived. The only thing I can believe is that she is trying to steal from me and extort me in the process., SHAME ON YOU SQUARE PEG ARTERY & SALVAGE!!!!! You don't want to sell my work, you want to steal it.

Scott and I traveled to the capital the weekend of March 19th and 20th to protest the ongoing wars and also the detention and torture of Bradley Manning. We were both arrested, Scott in front to the White House

Never the less, people are dying around the world due to American occupation, and if we don't stand up for our rights and the human rights of our fellow man we will loose those rights. The next rally I plan to attend, on the way to my hearing in Virginia on April 25th is to oppose the new nuclear weapons plant in Oakridge Tennessee.
These nuclear weapons are illegal according the rules and principles of humanitarian law, U.S war crimes (18 USC 2441) and Genocide (18 USC 1091) statutes and military law. It is the responsibility of every citizen in the US to find nonviolent ways to disarm these weapons. The economic situation: money for nuclear weapons is money not spent on schools, infrastructure, job programs and so on.
If you are in the area or have a vested interest in the future of all life please come to the rally on the 16th of April.

New Kid's Clothes: TreeHouse Kid and Craft + Square Peg Artery & Salvage!

All of this fabric came from the storage unit of a lady who had obviously loved to sew since the 60's, and she died recently. Her daughter was clearing out her storage unit, and Scott was meandering by on his bike, scoping for trash to turn into treasure. He talked with the daughter about how her mom loved to sew, told her about how I love to sew, and then brought two boxes of fabric home for me to make into these awesome little clothes!

WE NEED TO END THE WARS NOW!!!!!

My personal projects would not be possible if I weren't in this part of the world. Some people can't even gather fire wood to heat their homes with out being killed.. like the nine boys attacked and killed yesterday in NATO air strikes.

The boys were killed while gathering fire wood.
9 young boys deliberately killed by helicopter gun ships in Afghanistan... we here in this country need to end these wars, tell the DOD, call them @ 703 697 5131, call the White House: 202 456 1111.. here in Athens we protest every Tuesday from 5-6 @ the Arch. there is a protest in Washington with Veterans for Peace on March 19th. These wars need to end NOW!!!! We have to stop them!!
Please, I beg anyone with a conscience: take some time out of your life, a life that is not riddled with mortar shells through your living room, where you can go to a wedding with out being afraid you will be bombed for assembling....take some time and do what you can here to end these rapacious wars. The people there can't bring our military home, we Americans are the only ones who can. Please, invest some time in Peace, Love and Compassion and make our democracy work!!

Paris Montana: Burlap clothing on it's way to Arizona!!!

I have been working for this past month on a batch of burlap for the puuuurfect boutique! Paris Montana, a Black top Jewelery Box Boudoir on the road and in Phoenix Arizona! The main gypsy dame is Heidi, the maker of vintage, eclectic salvage jewelery. She found me through www.egretion.com, and also I think this post from a shop called Cactus Creek. and after a medium amount of work that too me a bit longer than I thought ( I am so sorry) some really smooth and elegant burlap skirts and pants are on their way! Here below are some in process construction pictures, but I didn't have enough time to take finished images of eveything before I put it in the mail!
There are lots of sizes in printed and non-printed versions of my signature short length pants
and also pom-pom and lace pencil skirts, pictured here with out the brown satin waist bands they have....
I also made a new style of pants, a burlap palazzo style that Heidi came up with, again, pictured with out the brown satin waist bands. These have side pockets

I also made three skirts in this style, at Heidi's request, although a bit shorted, as I have denuded the land of burlap sacks in a 20 mile radius, and just didn't have enough material to make them longer than knee length!

Tomorrow afternoon I will be @ the Contemporary Art gallery ATHICA wearing " The House of John King" board game costume, here in Athens; and if you are so inclined come and play the game with me!!!
It is the rendition of a dream I had as kid, where there was a house in the neighborhood, from the roof of which you could get into heaven. However, this crazy old guy lived in the house, and in a Baba-Yaga like adventure I had to find my way through the rooms of the house and find things hidden in there, and then I was able to use them to get up on top the roof. It's a tactile carnival style game filled with secret pockets and riddles, so bring your wits, bring your kids, and I'll see you tomorrow! Cheers!

I don't think I had a chance to thank you for the beautiful designs you sent in November.

I had hoped to get a x-mas card off to you but of course time got away on me and the season kind of took off leaving me behind on everything personal.

I just wanted to wish you a happy new year and thank you again for your work and your manner. I love having you in the store and my clients look forward to more of your creative genius in the future. I loved everything but ..was blown away by the coats I featured them in a fashion show and sold them both fairly quickly. the Pom Pom dress went to a fabulous industrial designer friend who wore it on New Years Eve..very well I might add. and one of the wool suits sold to a singer from Toronto who stopped in when she was visiting. The tulle top and dress are a bit more difficult for people to understand ..but I don't care..I love them!

Keep me posted on what new things you are making and just how you are doing in general.

Old Fashioned Business Candor

Several months ago I was referred by a client of mine to a salon to get my air cut. I went, and upon seeing art work on the walls I thought to inquire what the policy was for people to display their work there. The owner contacted me in a follow up email to thank me for being her customer, and I replied with my interest to create a display in her salon. We talked on the phone, emailed at length, I emailed images, links to my web sites, and we agreed that we would get back in touch after the first of the year, and make some plans.

Well, I sent her an email, and this was her curt un-expected reply:

"*&^%$#@ Salon is a "mainstream salon"....my clients are sorority girls, country club members, UGA professors, "the suits" of Athens.

My clients will not understand or appreciate ....your unique artwork.

My goal in owning a hair salon is to offer the very best quality hair service and the very best client service available in Athens, GA. "

My first thought was, "well I was client of hers, and so was the lady who commissioned a dress from me, who referred me..." so this is what I wrote back:

" I must say that I am dis-appointed, as I was looking forward to meeting you, but it's not the first time I have been rejected, or mis-understood. I think that in someway to say that your clients would "not understand" doesn't say much for the clients, and myself, I suppose, as well. I was rather trite and conservative when I walked across the threshold as well. I know that hand-made avaunt garde clothing is not what people see again and again, but encountering new ideas and objects is as normal and natural to the "mainstream" public as sweat pants in Walmart are. Over the years, after exposing myself and my work to many people as possible, in Universities, galleries, wedding boutiques,festivals, sometimes even at random sampling as a side walk vendor on the streets of major cities around the world I have come to realize that it is amazing how many experiences, emotions and preferences we have in common, despite the outer vestiges. Hence the old expression, "You can't judge a book by it's cover."

You should not under-estimate the people you do business with, or those who are coming to get their hair cut at your salon."

Well, she was very kind and wrote back to me again, saying"

Gretchen,

I never under estimate my clients and I know exactly who my clients are...educated, very savvy, very quality conscious citizens of Athens, GA.

My husband and I have been in the marketing business 30 plus years. We track the demographics of every client at Republic Salon and I am in the salon meeting and greeting and getting a beat on my clients.

I feel sure that all of us in the universe have similar emotions, experiences and preferences and that if we were put in a room two by two, all of us could find some common ground.

This similarity does not make for compatible marketing partners for artistic garb that is going to appeal to a limited market. And, I can promise you that sweatpants in Wal-Mart are a huge "money maker" for Sam Walton's heirs and for Wal-Mart shareholders like me.

Being frank and forward is the mark of a successful business owner...perhaps in our dialogue, you have learned something from me.

Go back and read your e-mail to me....you want the world to exist "according to you"....unfortunately the world already exists and you will eventually find your way into how you fit in to the world.

What could I say? This lady has wasted months of my time and energies, insulted me, and her clients to boot, and tried to aggrandize herself as a purveyor of elitism.... so here is my final reply. How many times does this conversation, about more broad minded ethics have to be had?

Thanks again for writing back.

I have had a chance to talk today with several other business associates, shop owners, and clients about our dialogue. One of them is the client of mine who commissioned a piece to be made for herself after seeing my work in a local restaurant here last year. She was the one who referred me to your salon to get my hair cut, and I in turn referred another client of mine who came to your salon on my recommendation. It was because of the strength of these recommendations that business passed from me to you, and why I was willing to pursue contact with you. I think the over riding conclusion from my conversations and reflection is that our communication went on far too long for it to end this way, and basically amounts to a waste of my time. I have been very up front with you and made full example of my work available to you for months. I already do fit into the world, I am here, no? Being frank and forward is the mark on honesty, and it can help in successful business. I have been very frank and open with you, and yet, my time has still be wasted.

The truth is that in fact my work appeals to a wider general public than what you would call "mainstream". I literally make clothes for everyone, and the demographic of people who have responded to my work when they encountered it, have sought me out and have been referred to me has crossed all ages, education levels, professions, ethnicities and genders. Sure, there have been many people who have not been interested in my work, I make it all myself, it would be crazy to think that I am trying to make sweat pants, as I could never fill the demand, but the cross section of my customers extends far beyond even what I would expect. For eaxample: I once had a cache of little plush frog heads that were pom poms on the back of children's socks, donated to me by a wholesaler who was going out of business. I worked them into thread illustrations on black fabric and made about 30 items, and as it turns out there are many many many people who have intimate story connections to frogs, and I heard many of these stories from the people I sold the garments to. A huge part of my mission and work in this world is to use what needs to be recycled, as we have far too much product on hand that has merely a half life in our personal spheres, and then just becomes refuse.

One way in which I do hope the world will conform to more idealistic standards is by the general public moving away from mass marketed crap like it found at Walmart. The business models of stores such as that is killing American jobs, as manufacturing moves over seas, quality is in the toilet, and fair labour standards and living wages plummet. The egregious over packaging is polluting our environment past the critical breaking point. I really believe that plastic and pollution from disposable packaging and single use items is poisoning our oceans, the other animals and plants we share this beautiful world with, and the industrial processes that feed the maw of consumerism are poisoning not only our physical world but our culture and individual spirit; the parts of our selves that really allow us to think for ourselves, express our values and preferences; such as we do when we see something new, or have a chance to experience art, or a new perspective. In the mean time though folks seem happy to wander around the big box stores that dot this magestic landscape, while we enslave and wage war on people around the world, while we bury ourselves in mountains of trash and relegate everything about our person-hood: our homes, our look, our accomplishments and our labor to the level of being merely a "commodity".

Seeing as you have been in the marketing business for 30+ years, I suppose I can now understand a lot more of why we have some of the troubles we do in the American job market, the corruption and perfidious greed of the stock market, the disrespect for environmental efficacy, and general egalitarian ethics. I have only been back in America for a year and a bit, and this experience with you, along with my work for two corporations, and the approach that was made to me by GA Tech to apply my soft electronic experience into military R & D have really opened my eyes to some of the toxic practices that are causing much strife around the world, and turmoil and suffering here domestically. The generations before have made some over sights that are costing us dearly, by us I mean the generation of rising adults and their children, the future of our economy, our society, and our world. There are some things I have learned from you, and I hope that I can improve upon the good, and keep working to reform the ineffectual.

I have no desire to communicate further with you. I can't say that I will come and get my hair trimmed again at your salon, and I can't say that I will recommend it to anyone else, but that's alright. You seem to know your clientele. I guess in the end you have made it clear that mine and my kind is not the type of business you want.

I prefer to work with gleaned materials, and was recently given several nylon boat sails that I want to use to make sculptural outer wear for men and women and children. I have also been asked by several different venues and art centers to present a wear able art installation of some kind. Thirdly, I have been making pop-up books and clothes with moving parts from bits of thread and water soluble glue.

I worked for a time in 2006 at The Banff New Media Institute in Banff Alberta, and there I met my friend Geoff Lillemon, which whom I am collaborating on this project. I want to make clothes that can be projected upon, or will be displayed as part of a larger picture of digital animation, and also garments with illustrations and moving parts that complement a digital animation. I would like to be able to display the works in a variety of ways, either as projections in conjunction with a cat walk type event, standing mannequins juxtaposed with looped projections, or something more theatrical with live models and the animation serving almost more as a set. A few weeks ago I got word that an amazing woman I have known as an acquaintance was planning on getting married. I have always really really liked and respected her, although I do not know her well, and I wrote to her and offered her my work to make her wedding clothes, at a reduced commission rate. I went to the Project Safe thrift store, and bought this collection of fabric for $4.00, and it was almost as if the fabrics had assembled themselves for me to come along and snatch up! I also used the last few buttons I have from local potter Maria Dondero, and the VERY last two by Susan Marczak, a Vancouver artist who made me the most amazing buttons. I used them on the red coat pictured below the wedding ensemble.

These were my words of inspiration to work from:
"I wanted to dress like early 60's italian peasant movie.... sorta humble, sexy, and modest. not alot of ruffles since I'm a gramma , I ain't tryna look like a virgin but i dont wanna look like a harlot."
This lady is 110% amazing survivor/lover/mother/friend/woman... and these are the pieces I have made for her. It has been an honor. I hope she likes it!

Black Mountain is just a stone's throw away from Asheville, where The Honey Pot is, a funky little hand-made/vintage clothing art shop @ 85 North Lexington Ave. I have sold some of my work there for about a year. "When I say I do this for a living, I mean this is how I pay my bills and feed my family, so please don't rip me off" vs. "The Gift Economy"...paradox

An artist friend of mine recently posted on Facebook that an artist she knows has been "ripped off" by another artist, who I assume is a print maker. I have been through many many bouts myself with people who commission work and don't want to pay, shops that do not want to finish paying their wholesale orders, consignment shops that don't cut checks in a timely way, or "loose" work, and also out-right theft..so this kind of conversation, as I am sure it would with any commercial artist, always gets me thinking about how I can't work in a state of anxiety or fear that what I do will be somehow abused, but also I can't work for free in our society as it is...anyways, I made one comment as follows:

"I remember once Julian (my son) was with me in my studio to meet a lady who was really slow in paying up, and he, @ 5, piped up and said " Can you go ahead and pay my Mommy for the work she did for you so we can buy some food!" When I say "I do this for a living", I really mean this is how I pay my bills and feed my family," and I have had to come right out and say this, bluntly, more than once, threaten small claims court..... It seems the only way to deal with the lack of integrity is to be very forcefully blunt and up front about fee schedules and terms, and let people know that this is business, just like anything else.. Too many artists slink around, even into rooms where they have been invited to give a talk! because they can't pay their bills. I am hoping that as this decade moves on people will go back to associating arts with artisans, as people who are not only special, but who have special skills, that deserve to be hired and paid for fairly and in a timely way."

and then, as the conversation kept going, on another day I had another thought:

"Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery"? Are there any original thoughts, impression or impulses? I guess this subject always gives me a lot to think about. It's a double edged sword sometimes because I not only make work that I want to reflect my own unique experience of life, and help me make a living, but also that will be reflective and vital for years after I am dead, and that can only be if other people grock onto my experiences and expressions as being deeply meaningful to them, to want to take it in.. archetypal....

Why do we still tell the Greek myths? Because they speak of deep human truths, not incidental personality encapsulated powerful moments...golly... and in my line of work, in fashion, things get recycled all the damn time! and legs and arms never change! With mass production being the aim of so many artist and designers there is a distinct difference between artifact, and object... and most "things" are designed to be easily mass produced, which means they have to be relatively simple: a modern song for instance: it usually takes only about 12 second to get the gist.. Think what it was like when artists made their own paint!!

When an artist is a crafts person so much more of themselves goes into the artifact they have made that it is captured in a irrefutable moment in time... combining space, time, and being into one place that can linger in the total experience of the people who encounter that artifact.. and possibly arrest them, make then stop and revere the moment they are alive to share with the object of art, there by more aware and enriched through the contact. That is what I hope gets "ripped on" shared, taken as ones own,. I guess when another person has that experience and is then so moved to re-create that moment again and again.. it can be very spiritual, and money is a cheap way of exchanging this kind of spiritual experience...a mean and archaic way.. but still I am really really glad to be a commercial artist, and also a hand crafts-woman, and in every movement of my body when I am at work I am trying to straddle these many worlds... and my artworks are the sign posts in the intersections.

Which way they go once they have left my care, and what they bear of me as they journey on into the lives of others, the lives of their owns, all these are outside of my "control. I hope I have imbued each piece I make with the emotion and precision to with-stand the survivalist instincts that characterize the way most people acquire and demand what they want out of life...so often at the expense of others. My creative powers are a gift, and in so expressing them I want to participate in a Gift Economy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economy). I hope that just as I give my words and thoughts freely, with out any pretense of even being heard, much less understood, I know that the more receptive I am, the more I will be able to take in and be nourished, and the more I will have to give back, and others can freely take in and nourish themselves.. maybe our paradigms will shift, 2012?! Re-weave the flux of space and time....through our culture.. share it like food, like words...and be nourished by all."

Sometimes I gotta wonder about the ways our free market society has us all pitted against one another. I know that I don't want to be a part of a garment industry where by I am buying bolts and bolts of fabrics spun from plastics, derived from oils, that are sewn by people who are bored and paid a pittance, so that I can have an empire like army's worth of seasonal goods that are far more in quantity than people need, sold at a price that outstrips the cost of food. So, I go to the junk piles and find bits of fabric that have been thrown away, or donated to the good will, and I hand sew them into something usable, well made and full of lively character. Sometimes people say I don't charge enough for my work, but I say, "Well, everybody works". I would much rather charge a reasonable price, maybe under value to what contemporaries charge, and have more people able to have the opportunity to encounter and enjoy my work than create something cost-prohibitive and elitist, which is so so so often the case with fashion.

What do I really need with a bunch of money? What is money good for? Buying stuff. After that, you can't sleep with it, make love to it, talk with it, eat it, wear it, play music on it.... I have been making clothes and pop-up books, supporting myself and my family with my creative works for ten years, and I have done it in situations that have not worked to my "professional advantage" in many cases, working in corners, in remote locations in the country, in small rooms, having to hide everything at the end of a works session so the floors will be clear for play and other activities of life, but all in all I prefer the simple intimacy I have with each piece I create to any kind of mass production design process, where I would be just another cog in a wheel.

This time a year ago I had returned to America, and was homeless, living in a tent in the woods, with animals for my neighbors, and simple abiding in the knowledge that I was born into this life and I deserve to exist, as we all do. I have found myself, a year later, in the position to be able to continue the work I am so able to do, and hopefully expand my market so that my works can encounter more and more people, but as I start again to meddle and transform the objects and materials that cross my path in this life, and fashion them into something that will be meaningful and useful for others, I am reminded that my purpose in this life, and in these works is not to glorify or justify myself to others, or to help others do that to their fellows... I work because of a deep desire to be useful and of service, yes, but I also simply exist, and the small movements around in my room, where I work, are as full of meaning as are the effects and vibrations of all life, and all our contributions to it, as our hearts vibrate and our minds whir. Can't you feel it? There are so may different textures to the feel of life! The paradox is thrilling!

Out Bound Children's Collection

This little collection of children's clothes are out-bound to Toronto: to The Future of Frances Watson. Incidentally, I went back to the empty space between to abandoned hen houses where I used to live this time one year ago. I had only recently returned to America, and I was homeless, and only beginning to dream of building my solar powered travel trailer, working nights at an all night diner. This is where I was living when I met Scott.
There are two of these little skirts, made from hand dyed indigo batik, kimono scraps and japanese calico. There are two deep little pockets in this lovely little skirt.

and the front of a little silk top, with sweater sleeves, and one of Maria Donadero's hand made buttons at the shoulder.
These two little apron dresses use a rather common old fashioned apron pattern matched with a little skirt. The apron fastens with two of Maria's buttons, and is embellished by little pillowy hearts stuffed with soft threads, and little pocket and little pink leaves, all edged with hand stitching. The deep magenta is 100% linen and the 100% pink cotton.

There we go! Copper cotton denim/spandex blend and taffeta!, a front pocket, and a LIGHTNING BOLT!

This play apron is a very cool thing: part collage, part book, part Egyptian regalia, with more of Maria's amazing buttons!. It is made from pieces of a sail that someone gave me.

This rain coat is also made from that recycled sail, as well as some of the patches. I think this rain coat is awesome, I am very proud of it. It's part Native regalia, part made scientist lab coat. It also has tiny little plastic ants!! and some of 3-D thread illustration eyeballs! and I used some old rick-rack I have had lying around for far too long. The edges of the trim are melted.
Okay, Meg and I both really got a kick out of a Comme des Garçons, and so I made this rendition for a little girl. The fabrics all came from a thrift store in Jackson County Georgia. It only has one pocket. The finishing of the lining is quite nice, and Maria's buttons look like they have just been waiting for the coat to hurry up and get made so they can fasten the lapels.

Here is the image I worked from. Isn't it a great piece?! I hope some little girl gets it as a present!

3-D Thread Illustrations with Water Soluble Stabilizer

I am in the midst of working on a commission pop-up book for a little boy in Connecticut, and also illustrated animated white clothes, and it seems like the perfect time for this post. My friend Wendy Tremayne (www.swaporamarama.org, and http://blog.holyscraphotsprings.com/) is a contributor for Craft magazine. She asked me to put together a photo essay of step by step how-to make thread wad 3-D pieces for the magazine..the article will be out in the next edition, so go get yerself a copy! Thread wad + water soluble stabilizer
Cut a piece of stabilizer twice as big as the piece you want to make + material you want to use. draw outline on stabilizer
sandwich materials between stabilizer and pin in place
sew around outline of piece and across the middle...like so:
soak in water to dissolve stabilizer, and lay on a screen. piece of paper or towel to allow to dry. Cut the excess material around the sewn lines.
You can re-use the left over scraps, waste not want not!

Little brains with eyeballs, teeth and lace commission

I had a piece up for sale that a young lady named Brittany Joyce wanted made into a dress rather than a top. It's a romantic little number with lots of recycled lace, sheer back, piping, and inset brains with eyeballs, ringed with lace and teeth. I made two while I was at it, the second one went to The Honey Pot in Asheville, North Carolina. It sold with in an hour or two of being on the rack, so I am working on another to take to Vancouver with me in two weeks.

I was given a roll of amazing kimono fabric from my friend Heather Cameron (www.truestitches.blogspot.com) Leather by Annette Paskiewicz (http://www.studiomodglass.com) and sails from Andy Rusk, and I made this costume I have been dreaming about making for years.
