The cliff palaces of Mesa Verde National Park.

This was how we spent July 4th: honoring the First Nations and their ancestors who built the cliff palaces of Mesa Verde National Park. These mountains, at 7000+ elevation, have been inhabited by pueblo tribes for thousands of years. On August 4th, we went to a feast at the Pueblo of Santa Domingo, and watched an incredible, intense and spiritual Ritual of hundreds of dancers in elaborate regalia, descendants of the same people who have always lived here.

There are many of the sites you can walk up to and round without reserving a guided tour with a ranger.

Navajo Canyon

I'm sure this file has been too compressed. So even if you was in din you wouldn't be able to see it clearly but, This picture shows far off in the distance the famous ship rocks in the valley, below. Passing through that valley is another worldly place, compared to this kingdom in the cliffs.

Exploring this neighborhood felt just being in any neighborhood and modern times.

The community reservoir.

There are some nice campsites and trails here. It was too hot, but I would love to come back in the spring or fall to camp and hike.
